Useful Occupational Hygiene and Safety Links

Canadian Council of Occupational Hygiene The Canadian Council of Occupational Hygiene (CCOH/CCHT) is a not-for profit organization, established to promote the practice of occupational hygiene in Canada and to promote an exchange of information amongst Canadian OHS Associations. All members of the constituent provincial and territorial associations are automatically members of CCOH.
Canadian Registration Board of Occupational Hygienists  The CRBOH is a national organization which sets standards of professional competence for occupational hygienists and occupational hygiene technologists in Canada.
Canadian Centre for Occupational Health and Safety (CCOHS) CCOHS offers an enormous range of health and safety information, via internet or CDROM. They will answer individual queries via their inquiries service, and some basic information is available free of charge. If you are not familiar with CCOHS, their site is well worth a visit
Occupational Hygiene Association of Ontario (OHAO) OHAO is an Ontario based organization dedicated to developing and promoting the profession of occupational hygiene. They publish a directory of occupational hygiene consultants, useful to persons seeking the assistance of a consultant.
Ontario Ministry of Labour - Occupational Health and Safety The Ontario Ministry of Labour Health and Safety page has links to current and proposed occupational exposure limits, draft regulations, alerts and advisories.
Industrial Accident Prevention Association (IAPA)   IAPA is a not-for-profit association of over 40,000 member firms across Ontario dedicated to helping these firms achieve safe, healthy and productive workplaces.
The International Occupational Hygiene Association (IOHA) IOHA represents the global community of occupational hygienists. The International Occupational Hygiene Association (IOHA) is an association of occupational hygiene organisations from across the world. All of these are dedicated to the discipline and application of the inherent principles of occupational hygiene.
American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists (ACGIH) ACGIH publishes a wealth of occupational health related information It is a valuable resource for industrial hygienists and related professionals worldwide.
American Board of Industrial Hygiene (ABIH) ABIH, was organized to improve the practice and educational standards of the profession of industrial hygiene. It administers the CIH certification process. This site contains a number of useful documents including "What is a CIH?"
American Industrial Hygiene Association (AIHA)
The AIHA is the largest international association of occupational and environmental scientists and engineers practicing industrial hygiene.
   
Confined Space This is a Blog or web log written by Jordan Barab, who has had extensive experience as a health and safety administrator for American governmental and labor organizations. His commentary is timely and very political. He believes that while fact sheets, health and safety manuals and Material Safety Data Sheets are important, working people also need opinion and commentary on the politics of workplace health and safety.
Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) The mission of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency is to protect human health and to safeguard the natural environment. Their website is a valuable resource for the occupational and environmental health professional.
Health, Environment & Work This site provides many academically based educational resources (also available as FAQs), a search facility, as well as vetted and updated 'links' relating to Occupational and Environmental Health and Medicine. It is maintained by Raymond Agius at the University of Edinburgh.
   
National Hearing Conservation Association (NHCA) NHCA has a number of useful links to sources of information on hearing conservation and noise induced hearing loss at their links page here.
   
National Institute of Occupational Safety & Health (NIOSH) NIOSH is part of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and is the only US federal Institute responsible for conducting research and making recommendations for the prevention of work-related illnesses and injuries. This website is a great source of health and safety information.
NIOSH Nanotechnology Page Occupational health risks associated with manufacturing and using nanomaterials are not yet clearly understood. The rapid growth of nanotechnology is leading to the development of new materials, devices and processes that lie well beyond our current understanding of their environmental and human health impact. This page is a valuable starting point for anyone looking for current information on nano-scale particles, potential exposures and health effects.
Occupational Safety & Health Administration (OSHA)

OSHA is the American federal agency responsible for promugating occupational health and safety legislation. Their stated mission is to save lives, prevent injuries and protect the health of America's workers.

 

 

Workplace Health and Safety Centre

The Workers Health & Safety Centre was established by the Ontario Federation of Labour to promote workplace prevention measures to reduce occupational disease, disability and death.

Adjusted TLV-TWA calculation tool

The IRRST in Montreal has developed a nice online tool for calculating adjusted exposure limits for a wide range of compounds, based on a time-to-effect model. This is very easy to use and answers a common question we are asked in our courses; "How can I adjust for the fact that our employees do not work an 8-hr day and a 40-hr week?"
