About ALARA
ALARA has offered a comprehensive consulting service in occupational and environmental health and safety to the private and public sector since 1987. The company was started by a husband and wife team with a strong interest in applying their scientific training to the prevention of occupational illness and injury. Our clients are organizations and institutions where workers may be exposed to chemical, physical, biological, or ergonomic hazards. Our contribution is to recognize and evaluate the severity of these hazards and propose appropriate control strategies when necessary.

A second important service we provide is to act as an educational resource for both employees and health and safety management. personnel. We are frequently asked to make presentations to workers and management on health hazards, their evaluation and control. To this end we have developed a number of worker training programs for our clients as well as several intensive professional development courses for occupational hygienists and other occupational and environmental health and safety personnel.

Industrial / Occupational Hygiene

The role of an occupational hygienist is to anticipate, recognize, evaluate, and control hazards in the workplace that may be harmful to employees, the community, or the natural environment. This requires an understanding of industrial processes, and the health and safety hazards associated with these processes. Occupational hygiene is an interdisciplinary field; a competent hygienist must have a strong background in the physical sciences as well as a knowledge of biological sciences including human physiology and toxicology.

By identifying and evaluating health hazards, and recommending control procedures, we assist our clients in their efforts to maintain the quality of working life and productivity of their workers and to protect the community in which they live.
